His lengthy argument, in his own defense, boils down to his belief that sex is a corrupting influence and therefore should be eschewed by all, thus leading to the end of mankind. Pozdnyshev has murdered his wife and is telling the story of how the evolution of his beliefs led him to this horrible event. This grim classic is told by Pozdnyshev to a fellow passenger, both of whom are traveling on a train in Russia.
